Buying automotive relays: voltage, layout and specification checklist
What to confirm when sourcing 12V or 24V relays: the exact reference, coil voltage, contact arrangement, ratings and connector evidence.
The number of visible terminals is not a complete relay specification. Manufacturer catalogs distinguish configurations by voltage, switching arrangement, ratings and other features. Use the original part reference and the required technical documentation to narrow a sourcing inquiry, rather than assuming that any relay with the same housing will do.
Confirm the reference and rated voltage
Record the complete reference and the marked rated voltage. Do not infer voltage from the vehicle brand or from the fact that a part is described as a truck component. The live catalog examples below have their own supplied remarks; those remarks do not describe every relay in the category. If the marking is missing or unreadable, request confirmation before ordering.
Ask for the correct diagram and ratings
Request the proposed part’s terminal/contact diagram and relevant electrical ratings. Pin count alone does not confirm which terminal performs which function. Ask whether suppression components, mounting style and the required connector are present. Do not substitute a different configuration just because its footprint looks similar, and do not short terminals as a purchasing test.
Use a sample check with an agreed acceptance record
For a new item, discuss sample availability and specify what will be checked: reference marking, dimensions, connector, documentation and the agreed functional requirements. Testing and installation should be handled by qualified personnel using the correct documentation. Record the approved sample identity and any permitted differences; a sample request does not imply that samples are available or free.
Send a specification-led inquiry
List the OE/item reference, required voltage, quantity and destination. Attach or identify the correct datasheet when available. Mark unknown ratings as “to confirm” instead of supplying invented numbers. Ask the supplier to quote the proposed configuration and identify outstanding technical questions before a production or shipment commitment is made.
Purchasing guidance, not installation or diagnostic instructions. Confirm compatibility and specifications with the supplier and a qualified technician.
